Twitter for Business Growth

August 17, 2009 Leave a comment

TwitterAs an individual, I never have understood the immense popularity of Twitter.  For clarity, Twitter is a microblogging service where you post (tweet) short messages and other users can “follow” your activity and be notified when you post new information. And one of the most popular ways to receive tweets is via a cell phone using SMS text messaging.

While many uses are frivolous, such as telling followers what you had for breakfast, there are many other pieces of information that are useful. As a business, church, or other organization you can notify your followers about events, specials, and general information of interest. When you tweet, your message has the potential to be seen by millions of potential clients. It is an opportunity that should not be missed.

Think of Twitter as less of a direct sales platform and more of an information gateway and tweet things that you would be interested in reading. This helps ensure your content is not just sales pitch after sales pitch and makes it so that others will be interested in reading it and will help grow your following. Chris Brogan wrote a great article with 50 ideas on using Twitter.

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t have many followers. It takes time as a small and growing business, and many Twitter users will see you message even if they are not following every message.

As a small business you may be thinking, “I don’t have time to go post at yet another place.” Good news! BTS can integrate Twitter right into your website, so from the same place you write a new blog post or update your business information, you can also tweet (even automatically)!

You obviously know something about your industry or you probably wouldn’t be in that business. Get social, show your human side, tell us what you know and what’s interesting, Twitter and watch your business grow.
